Counterpoint to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! : IPAs can be amazing. Case in point, I stumbled upon this really hard to find (in my area) bottle of joy at lunch, and grabbed 3.

505, when we finally meet, I’m bringing one of these, and you can tell me it sucks in person ;)

Ok first of all, you are holding what is generally known as one of the best beers in the world, so I don’t know that it’s a good comparison point.

Secondly, I totally agree with 505, overly hopped IPAs just try too hard. They aren't very pleasant to drink.

I don’t disagree at all, I’m just taunting him. This is indeed one of the finest beers I’ve ever had, and is a shining example of high hop content done right.

I actually love the insane hopped stuff :) Not because I’m a hipster though, I just love the citrusy piney stuff.

Went to a beer/wine fest last friday. Dont remember what it was called, I know it was an IPA but it seriously tasted like someone shoved a pinecone in my mouth.

True story. But I don’t drink during the week to fight them off. I still fail.

That’ll happen, I think Citra and Simcoe hops do that if used to excess.

The younger is the best beer not the elder, and even the younger is highly over rated. I’ll take any of Stones enjoy by over that. Or even Green Flashes West Coast IPA.

It was more of a joke. But thanks for the offer. I’ve had it a number of times, and honestly, I am typically more about trying new things than returning to old ones. Though I do search for Pliny every time I’m in CA. =)

Even so, an Oppo beer exchange could be pretty cool, there’s lots I can’t get from east of the Rockies. I always try new stuff as well, and despite living right between SF and LA, Pliny is nearly impossible to get, so I savor it on the rare occasion I can. It’s probably been 3 years since I last had it. Nice to remind the palate :)

Over Hopped IPAs suck the Devil’s dork.

I’ll add homebrews into that mix just for fun. Nobody wants your homemade Pumpkin flavored Bear Piss.

Beer Snobbery has to end!

Everyone has a different definition of “over-hopped.” I’ve had some that were undrinkable, others that were amazing. I have Miller Lite in my fridge, next to two good IPAs. This is not snobbery, Pliny is just damn good. And I wanted to counterpoint ol’ 505 for fun, because it often seems we’re the same person in most other matters. And I’ve had terrible homebrew, some of it admittedly my own, but I know a couple of guys who give the best professional craft brewers a run for their money, every time, across multiple styles. If they offer me a beer, I’ll never turn it down.

Dunno if you get to Asheville NC but there’s a couple of really outstanding micros up there...best know is Wicked Weed. Head down to Charlotte and visit Olde Mecklenburg - they do proper German beers...pils of course but also the Dusseldorf-style Altbier and a great dunkle. And near me we have Fortnight Brewing - British beers. God I love this stuff :)

I have to bring home some Dogfish 120 for my neighbor when I travel to Maryland...he loves it. I am *not* a hophead yet I find the stuff fairly palatable because, well, it’s just not that hoppy. Weird but that’s what my taste buds tell me...

You’re preaching to the wrong guy. Even though I opened the door.

My approach to Beer is simple.

Drink the cheapest daily and enjoy the “good stuff” rarely.

The Good Stuff is a treat.

I’d hate to have something like Stella, Bell’s or Green Line on hand while wrenching. I’ve seen the waste. That’s why beers like High Life, Blatz and Bug Light exist.

They have Pliney every Tuesday I think at a store here in Marin, south of where they make that. Apparently you have to go in the morning because it sells out by noon. Pliney won’t up production haha

Sounds about right. I was eating lunch at a nearby deli and they were stocking the cooler with it as I ate. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it’s gone already, 4 hours later. When Russian River does Pliny the Younger, which is only available at the brewery, the line is around the block and people drive from hundreds of miles away. I’ve never been, but apparently it’s insane.

My friend is a Whole Foods buyer and they get a certain amount once a week, then it’s gone in a few hours. People stock up.

Dogfish is masterful at making obscenely hoppy beers deceptively smooth. I’ve never had 120, but 90 goes down like a beer half its percentage.

I once had a buddy grab me a case from Whole Foods in the Bay, then bring it down. We just got a Whole Foods here, it remains to be seen if they’ll maintain the beer selection available elsewhere.

They make a meade up north and I want to try it, I think I saw it. Whole Foods are run by each store so what they do is up to them, I don’t like that they are anti union, I am in a union, but they do profit sharing in each department and they can kind of run their departments like independent stores because each community is different.

I haven’t made it out there. But a friend of my brothers brought back this guy full of a stout that was delicious.

He invested a decent amount of money with those guys and brought back a ton of beer. The stout was all the reached me.

Picture was *just* taken. =)

I’ve got four brewies in Asheville that use my company’s products - Highlands Brewing, the new (and spectacular) Sierra Nevada plant, the new Oskar Blues plant and the under construction New Belgium plant.

I love calling on the smaller plants - the guys are fun yet serious and a pleasure to work with.
